DEFRA have compiled a survey of over 3,500 people to get an insight into what people in England think and how they behave in regard to the environment.

• 4/10 people in England feel they know a lot about the environment
• 1/100 people have used a carbon offsetting scheme
• 17% of us feel guilty about taking short haul flights
• 1/3 of people talk to friends & family about the things they can do
• 1/7 say they have suggested improvements that could be made to their place of work
• 48% of respondents had at least one energy saving light bulb & 56% had 3 or more
The groups who had already made changes to their lives (recycling more, wasting less food, cutting down on electricity, gas and water usage) were in fact those aged over 65, those living in rural areas or those in higher social grades.

Around two fifths of those interviewed claimed to know at least a "little" about carbon off-setting, and one in five knew a fair amount. 6 out of 10 of the latter had negative views about carbon offsetting, believing carbon offsetting encourages people to carry on as normal, doing things that harm the environment. Just over 1% had us
ed a carbon offsetting scheme to offset flights or other forms of travel.

Half of those interviewed agreed that they tried not to buy products from a company whose ethics they disagreed with and made an effort to buy locally. Opinion was divided on being prepared to pay more for environmentally friendly products. 44% agreed, 29% disagreed.
